ROCB Europe and CARICC Strengthen Cooperation in Combating Illicit Drug Trafficking
From June 22 to 23, 2024, the Regional Office for Capacity Building (ROCB) Europe delegation, led by Director Antonio Lo Parco, visited the Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Centre (CARICC) in Almaty, Kazakhstan to enhance cooperation in the fight against illicit drug trafficking.
During the visit, ROCB Europe and CARICC officials discussed drug trafficking trends, intelligence-sharing mechanisms, and capacity-building initiatives aimed at strengthening regional enforcement capabilities. The meeting resulted in a series of agreements focused on enhancing collaboration between customs and law enforcement agencies in Central Asia.
One of the key outcomes was the development of joint training programs designed for customs and law enforcement officers in the region. These specialized courses will cover drug detection techniques, risk assessment for customs inspections, and the use of advanced technologies such as AI-driven analytics. The training aims to improve the ability of officers to identify and prevent the smuggling of narcotics across borders.
Given Central Asia’s strategic position as a key transit route for narcotics smuggled from Afghanistan to Europe and beyond, strengthening cooperation between customs and law enforcement agencies is seen as a critical measure in combating organized crime and enhancing border security.
ROCB Europe’s engagement in this initiative aligns with the World Customs Organization’s (WCO) broader efforts to combat illicit trade through enhanced enforcement strategies, capacity building, and regional partnerships.
The visit marks an important step in reinforcing the partnership between ROCB Europe and CARICC, demonstrating a shared commitment to tackling illicit drug trade and ensuring stronger security measures in international trade corridors.
